Lousas is the name for the type of slate soil that predominates in the Ribeira do Sil and Amandi sub zones of Ribeira Sacra. The slate serves a great purpose, heating up during the daytime sun, helping the grapes ripen, and also imparting minerality and intensely floral and spicy aromatics that are the trademarks of Ribeira Sacra wines.
Aldea means “village” in Galician dialect. It’s Envínate’s goal to produce single parcel, as well, as village wines in each region they work. This particular wine is a blend of different parcels of Mencia, at least 60 years of age, planted between 400-600 meters of elevation.
Fermented with wild yeasts in open top tubs, the wine is then raised in old 300 and 400 litre French oak for 11 months with no racking. No SO2 is added until bottling, and neither stabilization nor filtration are employed.
One of the finest exponents of the Ribeira Sacra, the wine has a lovely crimson colour. In the mouth, the red fruit smells very pure, with bright cherry. This sweet fruit flavour is balanced by chalky tannins and fresh acidity. This wine has lots of life and complexity.
