Envínate La Santa de Úrsula 2022 | DO Tacoronte-Acentejo, Tenerife

95 Points — Wine Advocate (Luiz Gutiérrez)

Producer: Envínate Region: DO Tacoronte-Acentejo, Tenerife, Canary Islands, Spain Grape Variety: Listán Negro, Negramoll, and Listán Blanco — 100+ year old field blend, pie franco

The Vibe Tenerife doesn't make wine like anywhere else in Spain — or anywhere else in the world. Three parcels of centenarian, ungrafted vines in the La Corujera area on the northeastern coast of Tenerife, at elevations between 350 and 650 metres, on sand and clay soils over red basalt bedrock. The island's volcanic geology and Atlantic humidity produce a red with a profile that has no real European equivalent. This is only the second vintage of this wine.

The Taste Cherry and bramble lead, then the island asserts itself — gun smoke, balsamic lift, rose petals and talcum powder. The 2022 vintage is darker and riper than its predecessor, with a juicy palate, fine tannins, and a long, lingering finish. The tension between ripe fruit and volcanic mineral grip is what keeps you coming back to the glass. A small portion underwent carbonic maceration and about half was fermented whole cluster, all in concrete, then blended and rested eight months on lees in 228-litre neutral French oak — bottled unfined, unfiltered.

The Story Envínate — literally "wine yourself" — is the project of four friends: Roberto Santana, Alfonso Torrente, Laura Ramos, and José Martínez, who met studying oenology at the University of Miguel Hernández in Alicante in 2005. Rather than making wine in one place, their aim is to explore the ancient terrain of Ribeira Sacra, the Canary Islands, and Almansa, letting each parcel speak for itself through traditional farming and minimal winemaking. La Santa de Úrsula is named for the village where the vines grow — vines that survived phylloxera on their own roots because the volcanic sand never gave the louse a foothold. 8,000 bottles and 100 magnums produced.

Best Enjoyed With Serve at 14–16°C. Mojo-marinated pork, roasted lamb, black bean stews, or aged Canarian cheeses. Equally good with 20 minutes of open air and nothing else.
