Clara Marcelli Irata Pecorino 2022 | Balanced Sharp Crispness
There's a reason why we have this Italian wine in our portfolio
Producer: Clara Marcelli (Emanuele & Daniele Colletta) Consulting Winemaker: Marco Casolanetti (Oasi degli Angeli) Region: Castorano, Ascoli Piceno, Marche, Italy Grape Variety: Pecorino (100%, DOCG Offida) Viticulture: Certified organic, hand-harvested, indigenous yeasts
The Vibe Every wine in the Cosecha portfolio is Spanish — except this one. Clara Marcelli sits near Ascoli Piceno in the Marche, where brothers Emanuele and Daniele Colletta farm 14 hectares of organically certified vines with one aim: wines that reflect the territory rather than the market. What brought it into the Cosecha portfolio is the same thing that defines every wine here — a producer committed to indigenous varieties, honest farming, and restraint in the cellar. Pecorino is to central Italy what Xarel·lo is to Penedès or Listán Blanco is to Tenerife: a native grape that industrial production treated as a workhorse and serious producers are finally treating as a subject. The consulting hand of Marco Casolanetti — owner of Oasi degli Angeli and one of Italy's most influential natural winemakers — shapes the direction of the entire Clara Marcelli range.
The Taste Intensely aromatic on the nose — herbs, ripe yellow stone fruit, orange peel, and a distinct salty lift. On the palate: excellent intensity and concentration, a round body, and a balance of soft texture with vibrant freshness on the finish. Pecorino's inherent character is sharp, fresh acidity accompanied by marine notes — a grape that loves the strip of land where the Apennines meet the Adriatic. Fermented entirely in stainless steel with indigenous yeasts and aged on lees — no oak, no intervention — the result is a white with the salinity and freshness of the best Adriatic cuisine and the structural backbone to age for three to five years.
The Story The Colletta brothers have been building Clara Marcelli since 1992, stepping back from the spotlight deliberately — their philosophy is that the wine should be the thing remembered, not the label. Pecorino as a variety has ancient roots in the Sibillini Mountains of the Marche, historically a mountain grape that descended to the coast and found its best expression in the strip of land between the Apennines and the Adriatic Sea. In the DOCG Offida — one of the Marche's most demanding appellations — it must be 100% Pecorino, hand-harvested, from certified organic vines. Clara Marcelli meets all of it without making a fuss about any of it. That restraint, in a wine world full of noise, is the point.
Best Enjoyed With Serve well chilled at 8–10°C. Grilled sea bream, brodetto marchigiano (Adriatic fish stew), anchovies, salt cod, seafood pasta, or soft fresh cheese. The saline freshness makes it one of the most instinctive food whites in the portfolio.
