Finca Mas Foraster vineyards in Conca de Barberà

While the rest of Spain spent decades chasing heavy extraction and soaring alcohol levels, a quiet rebellion was taking root in a hidden limestone basin in Catalonia.

Welcome to Conca de Barberà. Guarded by coastal mountain ranges, this high-altitude enclave is defined by its cool nights and ancient, rocky soils. For over a century and a half, the Foraster family has tended vines here. In 1998, Josep Foraster made the pivotal decision to stop selling their premium fruit to the bulk market and established an estate cellar. Today, under the guidance of his nephew, Ricard Sebastià, Finca Mas Foraster is farming 29 hectares of fully organic—and increasingly biodynamic—vines.

Their philosophy is absolute minimalism. They rely on spontaneous fermentations and strict, low-intervention practices in the cellar. There is no heavy oak to mask the fruit, and no chemical manipulation to alter the vintage. What goes into the bottle is a pure, unvarnished translation of the Sierra de Miramar.

The Philosophy

Native Varietals & Scarcity

For generations, the native Trepat grape was misunderstood. Treated as a mere blending component for inexpensive Cava, its naturally pale color and delicate frame were seen as flaws. Ricard Foraster saw it differently. Grown at 500 to 600 metres, Trepat—alongside ancient, high-altitude plantings of Macabeu—retains an electric, mouth-watering acidity.

The estate’s focus is strictly on site expression, meaning yields are kept deliberately low. This results in fiercely limited productions. Single-vineyard cuvées like Julieta and the collaborative Treparonto are highly allocated by the vintage. They are ethereally light yet structured by a profound mineral tension—built for the table, and strictly limited in availability.

Recognized by the Critics

This uncompromising, anti-industrial approach has not gone unnoticed. Foraster's limited-release wines consistently garner high praise on the world stage, frequently scoring 90+ points from James Suckling and earning top-tier recognition in the Guía Peñín. These are bottles that dramatically over-deliver, fiercely sought after by private collectors and top restaurants alike.
