Lousas is the name for the type of slate soil that predominates in the Ribeira do Sil and Amandi sub zones of Ribeira Sacra. The slate serves a great purpose, heating up during the daytime sun, helping the grapes ripen, and also imparting minerality and intensely floral and spicy aromatics that are the trademarks of Ribeira Sacra wines.

Aldea means “village” in Galician dialect. It’s Envínate’s goal to produce single parcel, as well, as village wines in each region they work. This particular wine is a blend of different parcels of Mencia, at least 60 years of age, planted between 400-600 meters of elevation.

Fermented with wild yeasts in open top tubs, the wine is then raised in old 300 and 400 litre French oak for 11 months with no racking. No SO2 is added until bottling, and neither stabilization nor filtration are employed.

One of the finest exponents of the Ribeira Sacra, the wine has a lovely crimson colour. In the mouth, the red fruit smells very pure, with bright cherry. This sweet fruit flavour is balanced by chalky tannins and fresh acidity. This wine has lots of life and complexity.

    This Mencia is exceptional.

The grapes come from extremely steep slopes rich in decayed granite. They are naturally farmed, naturally fermented, and the Fusco is bottled without filtration or fining, which is clear in the wine's opaqueness in the glass.

Ribeira Sacra is in the center of Galicia, a cooler and particularly rainy place so Mencia can come across as stemmy, unripe, green peppery.

Albamar's Fusco makes that hard to believe though, it's so deliciously supple and juicy!

Like the Blanco, this wine is made from many different red grape varieties native to the Canary Islands. They include Listan Negro, Listan Gaucho and Malvasia Negro. The parcels are very old and planted in between 75-300 meters of elevation right on the Atlantic Ocean. Like the Blanco, the vineyards are farmed by the same 15 different families and Envínate.

The wine is wild yeast fermented with 30% whole grape clusters in open plastic tubs and concrete tanks. It is then raised in small tanks, then aged in 225 and 500 litre barrels for around 8 months.

This is a fresh and aromatic red, with notes of spice, smoky minerals, and dark fruits. Bright acid, pepper and notes of dry-aged meat mingle in the mouth, leading to a long, satisfying finish.

Fedellos’ only white wine is a co-fermented field blend of native varieties from the same vineyard as Lomba dos Ares. The name is a play on Galician language, meaning “Con as brancas”, or “with the whites”. There’s also another joke in there, but it’s less polite so you’ll have to ask the Fedellos personally!

The nose is saline, with a little spice and hints of pollen and beeswax, while the palate is marked by vibrant acidity and plenty of minerality.

Comunica is refreshing with good acidity. It is fluid and well balanced with an initially sweet entrance and a salty finish.

It is no more (and it is no less) than a snap-shot of the Fontanals-Baboixos estate.

It depicts the estate’s soils of decomposed granite and climatic conditions which are slightly less severe tan those of the rest of the area. This is why you will find that Comunica is a very unusual wine.

    $1,260.00

Las Iruelas is a muscular Garnacha from a plot of 60+ year old, head-pruned vines planted at an elevation of over 1000 meters above sea level. A mixed and sandy terroir of granite, slate, schist and quartz with patches of clay, this is the most complex soil that Dani Landi works in the Sierra de Gredos.

Hand harvested, the whole cluster grapes undergo natural yeast fermentation in open vats. The wine is then aged for 16 months in 500 litre French oak barrels.

With beguiling floral aromas that are more reminiscent of the Northern Rhône than the other bottlings from Dani, Comando G or Marañones, Las Iruelas shares the same delicate fruit and delineated mineral structure characteristic of the Gredos, but pitched deeper and more somber.
