Vinya de la Glòria 2020
Darmós, DO Montsant, Southern Catalonia
Varietals: Garnatxa
Producer: Joan d'Anguera
The Vibe This is the unicorn of the Joan d'Anguera estate—a masterpiece of Mediterranean restraint born from a historic, extreme vintage. In 2020, Storm Gloria dumped an unprecedented 950 mm of rain on Catalonia, creating a "heroic" year where the d'Anguera brothers sacrificed almost their entire crop to maintain their strict biodynamic principles. Refusing to use systemic fungicides against rampant mildew, they accepted devastating financial losses to protect the purity of the terroir. The result is a liquid record of a dramatic vintage, offering a Pinot-esque elegance and weightless intensity that places it among the most elite collector wines in Spain. While this exceptionally rare 2020 release is so scarce it has yet to be reviewed, previous vintages of Vinya de la Glòria have consistently commanded 93 to 97 points from Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate. This is a fleeting opportunity to secure an under-the-radar masterpiece before the critics inevitably take notice.
The Taste A fascinating paradox in the glass. The excessive spring rainfall provided the 50-year-old vines with an abundant water reserve, preserving an incredibly crunchy, electric acidity and a luminous, pale ruby color. Because the surviving yields were microscopic, the vines funneled all their energy into the remaining clusters, resulting in stunning concentration without an ounce of heaviness. Expect immense aromatic power—layers of dried flowers, wild herbs, blood orange, and wild strawberry—underscored by a deep, chalky mineral backbone. The whole-cluster fermentation provides a vertical structure with silk-like tannins, while 34 months of bottle aging adds tertiary whispers of sandalwood and damp earth.
The Story Sourced exclusively from a north-facing, 2-hectare parcel of 40- to 50-year-old bush-trained Garnatxa vines grown in calcareous sand. Driven by the intense mildew pressure of the 2020 vintage, yields plummeted to a microscopic 800 kg/ha. Hand-harvested in the second half of October, the surviving grapes were fermented 100% whole-cluster in concrete vats with indigenous yeasts. The wine was moved to old French oak barrels in December 2020, naturally settled through the winter, and aged for 24 months. Recognizing the unique structure of the vintage, the brothers then held the wine for a staggering 34 additional months in bottle before its release. Certified Demeter biodynamic and organic by CCPAE. Extremely limited allocation of 2 cases.
Best Enjoyed With Serve at 14–16°C in a large Burgundy glass to allow the complex aromatics to fully unfurl. This rare cuvée demands the finest pairings: roasted squab, herb-crusted rack of lamb, or a wild mushroom risotto with black truffles. It also beautifully complements earthy Mediterranean dishes and aged sheep’s milk cheeses.
