Case of Benje Tinto 2022 | $56.00 per bottle
Envínate Benje Tinto 2022 | DO Ycoden-Daute-Isora, Tenerife
94+ Points — Luis Gutiérrez, Wine Advocate
28,000 bottles produced.
Producer: Envínate
Region: Santiago del Teide, DO Ycoden-Daute-Isora, Tenerife, Canary Islands, Spain
Grape Variety: Listán Prieto (95%) and Tintilla (5%) — pie franco, 70–100 year old vines
Viticulture: Organic, hand-harvested, indigenous yeasts.
The Vibe Listán Prieto — known as País in Chile and Mission in California — is one of the oldest grape varieties in the western hemisphere, carried to the Americas by Spanish colonists in the 16th century. Here it stayed behind, growing ungrafted on volcanic sandy soils at 900–1,200 metres in Santiago del Teide on the northwestern slopes of Tenerife, and producing something the New World never found in it: elegance. The 2022 vintage is the most elegant Benje Tinto to date according to Luis Gutiérrez — floral, expressive, and precise.
The Taste Wild strawberry, raspberry, volcanic ash, and flint on the nose — brilliant ruby in the glass, vibrant and alive. Rose petals and talcum powder, then cherry brushed with sea breeze, smoky strawberry, and crushed peppercorn. Fine texture and supremely elegant tannins — energetic and bright without aggression. Each parcel is vinified separately in a mix of concrete tanks and open tubs, with 10–20 days maceration depending on the plot. The wine then ages 8 months in old French barriques on fine lees without battonage. Bottled unfiltered.
The Story Envínate — "wine yourself" — was founded in 2005 by four friends who met studying oenology at the University of Miguel Hernández in Alicante: Roberto Santana, Alfonso Torrente, Laura Ramos, and José Martínez. Roberto lives full-time in Tenerife, working year-round with a group of 15 local grower families whose untrained, free-standing vines make up the Benje parcels. The soil is worked entirely by hand without chemicals — no tractors can reach most of the plots at this altitude. Listán Prieto survived here because phylloxera never penetrated the volcanic sand. These are pre-phylloxera vines producing a post-everything wine.
Best Enjoyed With Serve slightly chilled at 14–15°C. Herb-roasted lamb, Greek-style lemon potatoes, grilled pork, Canarian papas arrugadas, or soft sheep's milk cheese. Give it 20 minutes of open air before pouring.
