Borja Pérez Artífice Tinto 2020 | DO Ycoden-Daute-Isora, Tenerife
Producer: Borja Pérez Viticultor Region: DO Ycoden-Daute-Isora, Tenerife, Canary Islands, Spain Grape Variety: Listán Negro (100%, ungrafted old vines) Viticulture: Certified organic, minimal sulphur
The Vibe Listán Negro is the indigenous workhorse of Tenerife — traditionally sold off in bulk, rarely bottled with any ambition. Borja Pérez restored old ungrafted vines back to full health, refocusing on local varieties like Listán Negro, Marmajuelo, and Baboso Negro that the island's wine industry had largely abandoned. The result is a red that looks like a Burgundy, smells like volcanic rock, and finishes like the Atlantic.
The Taste A pale, delicate red with a beautifully perfumed nose — rose petals, freshly crushed raspberry, and a delicate sea spray element. The palate starts with a hint of balsamic, then opens into redcurrants, pomegranate, and the faintest trace of bitter herbs. The volcanic, smoky sense of place is unmistakable. Light-bodied with fine tannins and high acidity — closer to Pinot Noir or Nerello Mascalese in frame than anything from mainland Spain. Fermented at controlled temperature in stainless steel with native yeasts and long maceration, then aged 12 months in third-year French oak. Sulphur only at bottling.
The Story The volcanic, maritime vineyards of Ycoden-Daute-Isora range from low coastal elevations to an average of 800 metres, with the most extreme plots climbing to 1,400 metres. The proximity to the Atlantic — its cooling winds and natural humidity — creates one of the most challenging and exciting climates for viticulture in Europe. On these soils, phylloxera never took hold. The vines are own-rooted and pre-phylloxera — a living relic of how European viticulture once looked. Borja didn't inherit a finished project; he inherited a farm and chose to make wine instead of sell grapes. Every vintage since has been an argument that the Canary Islands deserve a seat at the serious wine table.
Best Enjoyed With Serve lightly chilled at 14–15°C. Grilled tuna, roasted lamb, Canarian papas arrugadas with mojo, or mushroom dishes. The acidity and low tannin make it one of the most food-flexible reds in the Cosecha portfolio.
