The Vibe The D'Anguera family has farmed the same land in Montsant since 1820. Seven generations later, Joan and Josep make wine with the rigour of The Rhone Valley and the raw material of a grape Montsant spent decades trying to forget. L'Hostal is their most limited flagship bottling — their oldest Carignan vines, aged three years in used wood prior to release, beautifully fruited, perfumed and surprisingly light on its feet for this grape variety and region.  The name comes from a roadside hostel that stood on the estate over 80 years ago — no ruins remain, but the vines do. From two hectares, three barrels. Around 900 bottles. This is it.

The Taste Old Carignan done right is the Barolo of the Mediterranean — structured, grippy, and deeply aromatic, with a complexity that takes years to reveal itself. The 2017 is powerful yet balanced: fresh fruit and silky tannins working in concert, with the Carignan's inherent acidity keeping everything alive and the three years of used French oak adding depth without masking the vineyard. Grippy and refined on the palate — herbal overtones, dark fruit, mineral tension — with a finish that lingers long enough to make the next pour feel inevitable. Bottled without filtering or clarifying after 36 months in used 225-litre French barrels and 12 months bottle rest before release — this wine reached Ontario with five years already behind it and a decade ahead.

The Story After their father's untimely death in the late 1990s, Joan and Josep made a significant shift — moving away from the extracted, high-alcohol Montsant style toward more delicate, feminine, floral wines with real weight and precision. Inspired by a visit to Château Rayas and the support of Joan Valencia, one of Spain's most influential wine distributors, they converted to Demeter biodynamic farming, began foot-crushing their grapes, and grafted Grenache over their Syrah vines. The L'Hostal vines grow on loamy, calcareous, sandy soil alongside olive trees, almond trees, and Mediterranean fruit trees — an intercropped polyculture that is as much a biodynamic statement as it is a farming tradition. Cosecha's founders picked and crushed grapes alongside Joan and Josep at the estate in 2017 — there is a small piece of our own spirit in every bottle.

Best Enjoyed With Serve at 16–18°C, decanted for at least 45 minutes. Lamb tagine, Catalan fish suquet, braised short rib, aged Manchego, or truffle dishes. Cellar-worthy through 2032 with confidence.
