The Origin: The flagship red of Can Comas, blended from several estate vineyards to show the farm as a mosaic of soils. "Franc" here means frank, or honest. The core is De la Barraca, a 2.8-hectare north-facing plot of Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon on deep clay-limestone with pebbles, and Les Obagues Velles, 1.2 hectares of Cabernet Franc on deep clay-limestone with gravel, both planted in the late 1990s. The Profile: A structured Cabernet Franc-led red with the Pardas freshness underneath, released with real bottle age behind it. 14.5% alcohol, pH 3.56. Ready to drink now, with years ahead.
The Craft: 77% Cabernet Franc, 19% Cabernet Sauvignon, 4% Sumoll. Picked by hand on 19 September (Cabernet Sauvignon), 21 September (Cabernet Franc) and 25 September (Sumoll). Destemmed and moved by gravity into century-old concrete tanks; 18 days on skins for the Cabernet Franc, 16 for the Cabernet Sauvignon. Ten months in used 300- and 500-litre French oak, no fining or cold stabilisation, only a light filtration, then bottled in April 2023 and held further in bottle before release. 16,583 bottles. Vegan.
The Pairing: Serve at 16–18°C and give it 30 minutes in a decanter. Lamb, grilled beef, game, botifarra, or a hard aged cheese.
