Meritxell Palleja

Meritxell Palleja has winemaking in her genes. She followed in the footsteps of her winemaker father Lluis Palleja, who studied oenology in the coastal Catalonial town of Tarragona just south of Barcelona.

She gained experience working in the cellars of Domaine Leflaive in Burgundy and Pine Ridge Winery in California's Napa Valley. She then spent 18 years working with Alvaro Palacios in Spain's Priorat region, where she continues to make wine today under her namesake winery after launching the label in 2000.

In Priorat, some of the world's best Garnacha grapes are grown and the Carignan quality is incomparable. Meritxell produces her wine using a biodynamic approach - resulting in complex, nuanced wines with beautiful mineral notes and wonderful flavour.

In creating Nita, Meritxell Palleja wanted to pay tribute to her grandmother. Cal Nite en Falset was the name of the house where her grandmother lived and the label commemorates the embroidery that she used to make.

The wine is a classic blend of Garnacha and Carignan from Priorat and the conveys the fruity flavours and typical terroir of this region. This wine is produced with the desire to be more accessible and round in the mouth than the wine normally produced in Priorat.

The fermentation takes place in stainless steel and cement tanks, and the wine ages at least one year in bottle - giving it a round and balanced side. Fresh, mineral and balanced in the mouth with aromas of balsamic and hints of red fruit.
